Hello, I've only ever reviewed one other company on Yelp before, a place that lied to me about pricing for an oil change after I called in advance. I mention this because it gives some context as to how unlikely I am to make frivolous reviews. I usually don't consider it worth my time considering how often they can be faked/paid for. In 2018 was the first time I visited this shop with my '03 Volvo S80, I had recently moved to the area and was looking for a European auto shop to diagnose a rattling noise and an oil leak. Having only recently received the Volvo from my grandma who was no longer fit to drive, I was weary about which shop to choose because Volvo parts and labor are so expensive and it's often quite easy for a mechanic to take advantage of the mechanically less inclined like myself. I came into this shop for the first time and Amir was very polite and friendly. He went out of his way to explain what work he was going to do and how the mechanics behind it functioned. I hesitated to sign onto the relatively expensive fix until I had done my own research on the average price of parts and labor. Amir provided me his own personal phone number if I had any questions. I found what I thought were the same parts online for signficantly cheaper than he had quoted me and I texted him to confirm I was looking at the correct type of parts. I wasn't. After he sent me a link to the correct parts he would be replacing, and after doing more research myself, I confirmed that the price he quoted me was fair, keeping in mind that he would be paying a bit more from his supplier than someone who buys the parts themselves. This would be the case for any mechanic who isn't a personal friend giving me a bro deal of a lifetime. Long story short, he gave me his personal phone number and let me nag him at home when he was off the clock with my mistaken attempts to identify cheaper parts and was polite and patient despite this. He agreed to take pictures of the timing belt I was having replaced and provide them to me. This was after I learned my grandma had supposedly replaced it not long prior and it seemed unlikely it had degraded so much already. On a separate occassion, he showed me the broken parts of my suspension that were replaced, how poorly they worked when broken and how a properly functioning version should operate. He has consistently went out of his way to offer me alternative options that might save me money and was always very upfront, honest and genuine. Since Volvos are so expensive I'm currently debating whether I want to sell mine and get a cheap Honda/Toyota, but should I decide to keep it then I will most definitely keep coming to Amir for all my auto repairs. Full disclosure he did ask me to review him after he finished the work on my last problem, and I thought he definitely deserved it so here we are. Thanks Amir! Less

And if they find anything else with your car afterwards they will tell you ASAP. Hands down the best mechanic I have ever had. I met Mike the owner after going through a lot of bad things from other shops. From being lied to, to being ripped off. I told Mike what and been going on and he did not like what he heard. He told me to come in and he would try to help me. I had a turbo car and the turbo was not working. He quoted me a price to diagnose the problem. I was there for a couple hours while they diagnosed the problem. He was able to fix the car in that time. He charged me what he quoted me. Since then I have taken all my cars to him. He is honest and will give you options. I send all my friends and anyone who needs a mechanic there now. All I have to say is wowwwwww. I usually don't leave reviews. These guys definitely know what they're talking about. I recently moved back to San Diego from Florida. I shipped my 2007 Saab 9-3. I couldn't start my car on Thursday out of nowhere. I got a stability control failure, contact dealer. I was terrified at the possible cost of repairs. Especially since Saab is no longer in business and general motors are kinda weird about service for these cars. I dropped my car off to Mike and his team of knowledgeable certified mechanics. They did a complete computer diagnostics and had to replace a new relay that was causing the car from starting. The quoted price was way cheaper than there price I actually paid. I was in and out less that 2 hours. And a very very happy camper. If you have a Saab, or Volvo take it to Mike. He is honest and more than fair on price and don't give you Bullshit. I'm going to get my car serviced here for now on. In fact I'm getting a stage 1 tune for my beloved Saab this Thursday. Less

This review is long overdue. I am a new Swedish car enthusiast and if anybody knows owning an older Saab or Volvo is very enjoyable but pricey if things start to malfunction or need replacing... I have a 2000 Volvo S70 and I had gotten multiple codes for the variable valve timing. Well those codes can mean that the solenoid is out, the timing hub is faulty, the position sensor is faulty or the ECU is faulty or everything in between. I have been racking my brain on this thing because each of those can get pretty pricey if I replace them all. I got a diagnosis from a place that said it might be my timing hub and they wanted to charge me over $500. so I started looking for other place that could give me a second opinion. That is when I found SWEDISH AUTO TECH.. Mike told me to bring the car in and he would check it out. I brought the car in and in less than 10 minutes Mike diagnosed the problem as a VVT Solenoid issue... I got the solenoid replaced and I have not had any check engine light, or codes popup.. Mike and his crew are very professional and at the same time feel like old friends you haven't seen in awhile. It feels good to be able to rely on an honest and friendly mechanic instead of someone that just wants your business. Mike is very knowledgeable and in talking to him I have learned alot of things about Volvo and their maintenance. I also have a Volvo 850 turbo and I would get oil changes from those $19.99 places. The last place that I want to get an oil change from was Jiffy Lube. Jiffy Lube tightened my oil drain plug so much that the washer was flush with the head. I myself and a buddy tried to take it off but with no use that thing seemed like it was welded on. I took my 850 to Mike at Swedish Auto Tech again and literally within 2 minutes Mike had the drain plug out. I swear Mike and his mechanics got awesome Swedish mojo. This is my very first Yelp review and I can think of no company more worthy than Swedish Auto Tech to devote my time to review. I have a 2005 Volvo S40 T5 and a 2002 BMW X5 3.0i. I first brought my Volvo to Mike a couple years ago for an oil change after I purchased it from CarMax. Mike was thoroughly professional from Day 1. He confidently told me about his background, and he shared what he has typically found as potentially problematic with Volvo engines. His insight was well worth the cost of the oil change (which he shared is the "lifeblood" of the engine... his passion for proper vehicle maintenance was remarkable!). I later learned Swedish Auto Tech also handles other European cars so I brought my BMW to him for major engine work when an issue arose. Again, Mike was completely detailed in his diagnosis and patiently explained my various repair options. I needed brakes badly and after getting the car diagnosed I was shown all the wear and tear, what needed to be replaced and what will eventually need to be replaced as my car racks up more miles. I just bought a ' 93 Volvo 240 DL. I had some work done at another shop. This other shop told me that if I left the car with them for 2 weeks they would install cruise control. 2 weeks later I picked it up but no cruise control. They said they had a hard time finding the needed parts. I decide to order a cruise control kit myself thru ebay. I knew that could be risky since I am not a mechanic but luckily I got the right thing. I brought it to Mike and he had his top notch, award winning Volvo mechanic start to put it in. Uh oh, there was a bracket needed that was not included in the kit I bought on ebay. Mike drove all the way to Chula Vista and found the part in a junk yard but had to remove it from another Volvo. Bottom line is he took the time and effort to make sure that when I left that day my cruise control was installed correctly. It's working like a charm and I am grateful to Mike and his team. I've got a V70 T5 that I bought used and wanted to get up to speed on maintenance as it reached and surpassed 150k miles. I found Swedish Auto Tech on here shortly after moving to San Diego and after the first trip realized I wasn't taking my car anywhere else. I can't say enough good things about Mike and the team. He's upfront with what's wrong and what it'll cost to fix it. All work is done in a very timely manner. Everything is explained in a way that people with minimal mechanical knowledge can understand. If an issue is discovered during a repair, Mike will show you what they've found and let you know the severity of the problem. If multiple repairs are needed (as was the case with me), he'll let you know what's pressing and what can wait. There's no upselling and more importantly no corners are cut in terms of using cheap replacement parts. I've spent $4k+ here and my car is running at its best since I've owned it. If you've got a Swedish car, don't bother looking anywhere else; this is where you'll want to take it. These cars are too expensive to maintain not to take them to someone with the knowledge and experience Mike has. The quality of work is top notch and so are the people. Less

Amazing place! I have a 2003 SAAB 9-5 AERO that I have meticulously maintained for the past 150,000 miles. I just moved to downtown San Diego from Tampa FL. I was worried about being able to find a SAAB specialty shop around. But now I can sleep easy knowing these guys are here. Hi, This is my second yelp review ever. Hopefully, it will be posted. I have a 1999 Volvo S70 GLT. I first went to Swedish Auto Tech about nine months ago after San Diego Volvo told me that I needed to replace my heater core since they claimed that was the cause for the overheating. To replace the heater core would cost about $700 (if I remember correctly) and for some odd reason I thought I should get a second opinion. I've been a devoted San Diego Volvo customer since 1999 so this was strange for me. I did a search on Yelp and found Swedish Auto Tech. They had such great yelp reviews I thought I'd give them a try. So I called Swedish Auto Tech first just to price compare and was told by Derrin that it would be best to bring it in and have it assessed since it could be something else completely. I brought the car in and within minutes Mike, the mechanic, determined that I just needed to replace the reservoir. It had a visible crack in it. Why San Diego Volvo wouldn't have checked that first, when I said the car was overheating, I do not know. Anyway, the reservoir and labor cost me about $100. I left there thinking that if the car doesn't overheat after the repair then I would leave a Yelp review. It has not overheated once since then, but I forgot to leave the review. A couple of months later the Volvo wouldn't start. So I had it towed to SD Volvo and they informed me that I needed a new alternator-hundreds of dollars again. I guess I just wasn't willing to believe that the dealership would knowingly mislead me and that is why I thought I'd give them another try. Naive, I know. According to the dealership the battery was fine, but had it been bad it would've been covered under warranty (I bought it at the dealership). Intuition was telling me something was not right. So, I decided to have it towed to Swedish Auto Tech to have it looked at there. There I learned that the alternator was fine, but the battery was running low. Swedish Auto Tech again saved the day! I will never go back to SD Volvo again. I planned to leave a review after I could confirm that it was just the battery and that Swedish Auto Tech was right, but forgot. Then a few months ago, I brought my Hyundai Azera to Kearny Mesa Hyundai just to get an oil change. After the dealership did their full inspection, as part of the service, they notified me that I needed to replace the master cylinder soon. It was a safety issue. The car only had about 54,000 miles so I was surprised that I should have to replace it. The quote was for hundreds and hundreds of dollars. So I thought, well, I'll take the Hyundai in to Swedish Auto Tech for a second opinion since Swedish Auto Tech was right the other times and saved me so much money. I took it in for an inspection. The inspection cost me a $100, but I thought it was worth it if I could save myself the exorbitant expense of a new master cylinder. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the master cylinder! Mike showed me where there would be a leak if there were an issue, but it was bone dry! I couldn't believe that another dealership would intentionally deceive me. All I can say is BEWARE! Instead what Mike found was a minor oil leak that should be covered under warranty. Mike recommended that I go back and have the dealership do the repair under warranty. I went back to the dealership with Swedish Auto Tech's invoice and findings and spoke with the manager there. They confirmed that there was no master cylinder leak and apologized for the error. Thank God I got a second opinion! I told them about the oil leak and tried to have that covered under Hyundai's exceptional 100K mile warranty, but because the car had more than 50K miles and was inherited (I'm not the original owner) it would not be covered. Another lesson learned, before a warrranty is about to expire always have a thorough inspection done by an outside mechanic. Had I done that I could've had the engine repaired at no cost to me. Anyway, I've learned many lessons along the way and hope that through this review and other reviews you will not waste your time or money elsewhere. After three separate incidences, I'm a believer. So, finally I'm leaving my review. Swedish Auto Tech is great and as an added bonus the owner, Mike, and the staff are wonderful too. Now if I could only persuade my husband to take his old Mercedes there too. He still goes to the dealership and overpays. Less

I have taken our '05 XC90 V8 to these guys twice in the past year. Our car is solidly into its second 100,000 miles and is now requiring some repairs. The first time, I had to pick a repair shop when the car died on the road. I picked Swedish Auto Tech based solely upon the strength on these Yelp reviews. They attended to everything in an extremely friendly and efficient manner. The called me with a diagnosis, quoted the cost of repairs. They made no attempt to upsell once they started the work and the car was finished when promised. I left very impressed and spent far less than I would have at the Volvo dealership.My second trip 6/mos and 8k miles later was just as impressive. Called, got an appointment for the next day. They called me within an hour with a report of what they found. I authorized the work and was so pleased with the tally, that I called back to suggest more work. The car was finished as promised and the bill was exactly what they quoted before starting. Very personable, very prompt, very talented and friendly.Thanks to all of you at Swedish Auto Tech! Less
